Background: The new Ambassador from West Germany to Egypt, Dr hans Georg Steltzer, presented his credentials to Vice-President Hussein El-Shafei, at Cairo's Abdin Palace yesterday (Sunday).
Dr Steltzer has been at his post since August - but, due to the straining of relations between Egypt and West Germany following the Olympic killings in Munich, the Egyptians had postponed the date in which the West German diplomat could present his credentials. But West Germany's recent quick handing over of the three Arab commandoes to the hijackers of a Lufthansa airliner - and the ensuing criticism from Israel - has served to improve the German image in Arab eyes.
The ceremony was one of five held that day by Vice-President El-Shafei. International diplomatic protocol demands that certain official procedures must be followed - and the delay in Dr Steltzer's reception had caused a queue of senior diplomats to form behind him. They were the new Ambassadors from Guinea, Argentina, Zaire and the Revolutionary Government of South Vietnam.
