Background: Four speedboats and 12 men began a day and night journey on Monday (3 November) in an attempt to beat the world record for outboard motor endurance.
The setting was Theale, in the British county of Berkshire, and the Japanese-built boats were fitted with four different sized engines .. 8 HP; 15 HP; 28 HP and 55 HP.
Their record attempt could last up to 100 hours and cover a combined distance of 8,000 miles, but during this time the boats will never be out of sight of land .. nor more than ???3/4 mile from the starting point.
Three-man crews in turn will handle each craft over the one-square mile course as they try to beat the standing endurance level of 49 hours.
Strict control is also being kept on lap times and fuel consumption for the speedboat manufacturers' own uses.
