Before it began, the conference chairman, Ethiopian leader Mengistu Haile Mariam, was presented with the Association's emblem at the National palace. The award, for promoting trade, peace and co-operation between nations, was made by the Association's Secretary General, Mr. Gr. Uff Lorenzo M. Gallo. He said that, despite Ethiopia's troubled past, the country had retained its rich cultural heritage and its commitment to peace and freedom. The Association is a Rome-based multi-national private organisation promoting international understanding. The conference was held at Addis Ababa's African Hall. Mr. Gr. Uff Lorenzo M. Gallo said the hope of the conference was to create awareness of the social, cultural and economic importance of Africa, as well as its potential to build what he called a "new world founded on progress, peace and co-operation between peoples". He said the association's message of unity had been reaffirmed through the presence at the conference of representatives of firms and organisations from all parts of the East and West. The keynote address was made by the Ethiopian leader, who later presented this year's awards. The next conference will be held in Turkey will be held Turkey in May, 1983.
