Background: President Anwar Sadat of Egypt returned to Cairo on Thursday (14 October) from Damascus, where he held consultations with Syrian President Hafez Al-Assad. President Sadat, prior to his visit to Damascus, had spent two days in the Soviet Union discussion the Middle East with Kremlin leaders. He was understood to have briefed President Al-Assad on the talks.

The Egyptian leader won a new pledge of Soviet aid to strengthen Egypt's military might. In return, President Sadat has assured Kremlin leaders that Anti-soviet trends would not be allowed to develop in Egypt and allied Arab countries.

On Saturday (16 October), President Sadat will report on his talks to the Central Committee of the Arab Socialist Union--the party's policy making body.

SYNOPSIS: Flags, posters, and other decorations decked the streets of Damascus on Thursday, to coincide with the visit by Egyptian President Anwar Sadat.

The Egyptian leader was on his way home from talks in Moscow, and stopped off for consultations with Syrian President Hafez Al-Assad. The Egyptian leader won a new pledge of Soviet aid to strengthen Egypt's military might.

President Sadat had spent two days in the Soviet Union discussion the middle East with Kremlin leaders. While in Damascus, he reassured the Soviet Union that Anti-soviet trends would not be allowed to develop in Egypt and allied arab countries. It is thought that this assurance is in return for continued Soviet military aid along the Suez Canal.

Kremlin leaders have shown marked displeasure in recent months about anti-communist developments in the member states of the Tripoli Charter Alliance, which includes Egypt, Libya, Sudan and Syria. A joint communique issued in Damascus, prior to President Sadat's departure, called for the setting up of a political front on the Federal level to bring about a unified Arab movement.

Following his talks with the Syrian leader, President Sadat returned to Cairo. On Saturday he is due to report on his talks to the Central Committee of the Arab Socialist Union--the Party's policy making body.
