Background: At the entrance to the Texas State Fair grounds, in Dallas, opponents of the Viet Nam war read the names of Texas' Viet Nam war dead:
The reading of the roll of war dead began at noon. It was the first in a series of peace demonstrations planned in the Dallas area for the Fall. The Dallas Peach Committee has scheduled numerous events locally and is urging Texans to participate in those national events such as the Moratorium and the November 15th March Against Death, in Washington, D. C. Ministers and Dallas Businessmen read the names. The sky darkened as the reading went on. Winds picked up and a storm front headed across Dallas. Within minutes, the demonstrators were hit by a heavy rainstorm. They kept reading for a while, but finally stopped calling out the names of the dead. Some stayed on, silent, holding their signs of protest.

    Jim Ruddle, NBC News, reporting.
