    Background: BHUHERA, ZIMBABWE

Zimbabwe is facing one of the most serious droughts on record. The once lush plains of the province of Mashonaland are now parched and barren, and the area around Bhubera, some 300 kilometres south of Zimbabwe's capital Harare, is extremely dry. Most of the rivers have vanished and the local people have to walk many kilometres to the nearest borehole or well for their supplies. Relief rations are being distributed throughout Mashonaland by the Christian Care Association of Zimbabwe and the Ministry of Social Services. The people are given rations according to the size of their families. On average this is half a bag of maize and a quarter of a bag of peanuts per person -- a quota which must be made to last for two months. The worst hit areas are in the Matabeleland province where relief work is being hampered by curfews imposed on the region following rebel activity in the region and the abduction of six tourist last July.
