Background: KING CONSTANTINE RETURNED TO ATHENS FROM CORFU TODAY (SUNDAY) FOR A BRIEFING FROM HIS NEW PRIME MINISTER, MR. GEORGE ATHANASSIADES NOVAS, ON THE CRITICAL POLITICAL SITUATION IN GREECE. SINCE THE NEW PRIME MINISTER WAS APPOINTED, THERE HAS BEEN A WAVE OF POLITICAL DEMONSTRATIONS. LAST NIGHT SOME 30,000 DEMONSTRATORS DEMANDED THE RESIGNATION OF THE FOUR-DAY OLD CABINET OF MR. GEORGE ATHANASSIADES NOVAS. THEY SHOUTED "DOWN WITH THE TRAITORS" AS THEY PACKED THE PANATHINAIKOS FOOTBALL STADIUM IN ATHENS.

THE DEMONSTRATORS SUPPORTING MR. PAPANDREOU ALSO CALLED FOR A PLEBISCITE ON WHETHER THE MONARCHY SHOULD BE ABOLISHED.

SHORTLY AFTER THE MEETING THE GREEK CONFEDERATION OF LABOUR CALLED A NATIONWIDE 24 HOUR STRIKE - PROBABLY NEXT TUESDAY OF WEDNESDAY - IN DEFENCE OF DEMOCRATIC INSTITUTIONS.

MR. ANDREW PAPANDREOU, THE FORMER PRIME MINISTER'S SON AND HIMSELF A FORMER JUNIOR MINISTER, CALLED A PRESS CONFERENCE YESTERDAY. HE SAID THE SITUATION WAS EXPLOSIVE AND THAT THE NEW GOVERNMENT WOULDN'T GET A MAJORITY VOTE IN PARLIAMENT. HE SAID THAT HE DIDN'T SEE A SERIOUS BREAK BETWEEN HIS PARTY, THE CENTRE UNION, AND THE KING.

REPEATING HIS FATHER'S WORDS, HE CALLED FOR ENTIRELY PEACEFUL DEMONSTRATIONS, AND ACCUSED THE POLICE OF USING VIOLENCE AGAINST DEMONSTRATORS. RUMOURS THAT HE WAS INVOLVED WITH AN ARMY ORGANISATION CALLED "ASPIDA" WERE TOTALLY UNFOUNDED, HE SAID.

MR. PAPANDREOU RESIGNED BECAUSE KING CONSTANTINE REFUSED TO SANCTION THE DISMISSAL OF THE DEFENCE MINISTER, MR. PETROS GAROUFALIAS, FOR RESISTING A PURGE OF "FASCIST" ARMY OFFICERS.
