Background: St. Moritz, one of Switzerland's most famous ski resorts, saw a different but equally exciting winter sport at the weekend (Saturday, Feb 14) -- horseracing on snow. The meeting was held on a frozen lake.
There were three types of events -- ordinary flat racing, trotting and ski - joring in which a man on skis is pulled behind a horse.
The horses are specially shod to help them keep their feet in the snow.
SYNOPSIS: St Moritz is one of Switzerland's most famous ski resorts, but at the weekend it saw a different type of winter sport -- horse racing snow.
These events are very popular in Switzerland. This meeting was held on a frozen lake near the town. There were four races, two flat races, a trotting race and one in which the horses pulled skiiers.
The start of the Fein-Kaller flat race for a prize a GBP350. The field of seven raced over a distance of 1,800 metres. At the halfway mark Otellus and Adrian led from the Explorer and Tanaus. But Cut-Me-In gained steadily to share the lead with Otellus.
Cut-Me-In and Otellus ran neck to neck and crossed the finishing line together. The judges called for a photo and the verdict went to Otellus.
The ski-joring race was held over a distance of 2,400 metres and provided the crowd with some of the most exciting racing of the day.
As they came into the home stretch, Tyrone Blaze and Wizard Weezle moved up to challenge the leaders. In the last few yards Wizard Weezle went ahead of the early leader Czernin and held on to win.
