    Background: WESTERN SIBERIA, USSR

In the Soviet Union, the coal industry is under expansion. Vast areas of Western Siberia hold layers of the coal near the surface, providing economical extraction from open-cut mines. This is the Kansko-Atchinski field, covering hundreds of kilometres (miles) and containing deposits that will meet the needs of Siberia and Soviet Europe for many years to come. Development of this field commenced recently, using the latest technology to win the coal. Nearly half the world's coal deposits are in the Soviet Union, where total production exceeds 700 million tonnes a year. The Kuznetsk field (Seq 7) is a source of high-quality coal. It is a pioneer in the use of a semi-automatic method of loading coal for transportation. The coal is sorted accordingly to quality, then stored in four different warehouses. Work is now underway to convert this operation to fully computerised control. According to recent assessments, coal will meet 25 per cent of the world's fuel and energy consumption by the year 2000.
