Background: Hundreds of small children with their teachers paid tribute to Hans Christian Andersen, Danish fairy-tale writer, around his statue in Copenhagen's Royal Park, on the 155th anniversary of his birth, Apl.2.

Although born in Odense, on Denmark's Funen island, Andersen spent the most of his life in Copenhagen. Traditionally, small children group around the statue while their teacher reads them his world famous stories. They place flowers at the statue's base. When the reading is over, many parties make their way to Copenhagen harbour where there is a small statue of one of Andersen's best-loved creations - the Little Mermaid.
