Background: The Rome Bus Company ATAC (Azienda Tramvie e Autobus Communale) started today nine-day experiment offering free bus service during the day. This experiment is the first of its kind in Italy and passengers will be asked to express their opinion of the service on special questionnaires. The service will cost some GBP340,000 AND IS AN ATTEMPT on the part of Rome Town Council to encourage the use of public transport. The experiment may be thwarted because the number of buses has not increases with the number of prospective passengers so the result may be impossibly overcrowded buses. After January 7 when the experiment ends, the Town Council will then decide, depending on the results, whether and) in what capacity to continue the service.
