Background: The last of the 4,100 stateless Asians left Kampala, Uganda, Thursday (9 November) night to refugee camps in Europe. Refugee centre have been set up in Italy, Austria, and Belgium.
Three-hundred and fifty stateless Asians are in Belgium with another hundred and fifty expected. They have been given accommodation at a Westende resort before proceeding to new homes in South America.
The international effort to aid stateless Asians expelled from Uganda has been organised by the United Nations with the cooperation of a number of countries.
SYNOPSIS: At a holiday camp on the coast of Belgium over three-hundred-and-fifty stateless Asians have been given temporary accommodation by the Belgian Government. The stateless Asians are part of the more than four-thousand expelled from Uganda by President Idi Amin, and given sanctuary in camps in Italy, Austria, and Belgium. A hundred-and-fifty more Asians, part of the last group to leave Uganda, are expected to make their way to this camp in the next few days.
During the summer months, this camp would be filled with Belgians taking advantage of the seaside facilities. For the Asian children, it is a chance to enjoy themselves.
These families will be the guests of Belgium for only a few months, until permanent homes can be found for them in South America....For these stateless Asians, their visit to Belgium is just another stop on a trip that will ultimately give them a chance to start their lives anew.
