Background: President Moktar Ould Daddah of Mauritania opened the sixth Congress of the Central Mauritanian Workers' Union on Friday (20 May).
SYNOPSIS: The Congress was held at the headquarters of the Mauritanian People's Party in Nouakchott. President Ould Daddah appealed to delegates for more drive and perseverance to build a more just and prosperous society, willing to fight for justice and peace in the world. Members of the diplomatic corps attended the Congress, as did about 30 delegations representing trade union organisations in Arab, African and European countries.
President Ould Daddah said the Arab-African world was facing artificial tensions like the ones imposed on his region. He said the effect of these tensions could only delay and not alter the outcome of the various battles facing the peoples of the Third World.
