Background: A massive protest march in Venezuela brought traffic in the streets at the capital Caracas to a halt on May 25. Demonstrators were protesting against the high cost of living and unemployment The 17 kilometre long march was led by leftist presidential candidate, Jose Vicente Rangel. It also had the support of other political parties in the country. Rangel, who is running third in popularity after Accion Democratica and the Copei Party, claims has offering an alternative to an alleged 25 years of bi-partisan corruption and inefficiency. The Venezuela government is currently holding talks with banks in an effort to re-finance its huge foreign debt. However, the banks have told Finance Minister Arturo Sosa that they would refuse to re-schedule Venezuela's debt unless the country took stringent measures. These include a 28 per cent devaluation of its currency, state spending, price controls and removal of import barriers. So far, the government has rejected the recommendations as being too harsh.
