THE WEATHER, BECAUSE TWO HOURS AND TEN MINUTES WERE LOST AT DIFFICULT TIMES TO BAD LIGHT AND RAIN. AND COLIN BLAND BECAUSE OF HIS MAGNIFICENT UNBEATEN INNINGS OF 144.

ENGLAND MADE 531 IN THEIR FIRST INNINGS. SOUTH AFRICA CAME INTO BAT AND FINISHED THEIR FIRST INNINGS WITH 137 RUNS ON THE BOARD. FORCED TO FOLLOW ON, THEY HAD MADE 146 FOR FOUR WICKETS WHEN THE LAST DAY'S PLAY BEGAN ON WHAT LOOKED AN EASIER PITCH.

THE FIRST WICKET TO FALL WAS THAT OF R. POLLOCK WHO HAD PLAYED A FINE DEFENSIVE INNINGS. HE HAD MADE 55 RUNS WHEN HE PUSHED UT TO A BALL FROM ALLEN WHICH BROKE ONTO HIS WICKET. AT THIS POINT SOUTH AFRICA HAD 196 AND STILL NEEDED 18 RUNS TI SAVE AN INNINGS DEFEAT. BLAND WAS AT THE OTHER CREASE WITH 33 HAVING TAKEN TWO HOURS TO SCORE 23 RUNS.

VARNALS REPLACED POLLOCK BUT WAS SOON ALLOWING BLAND, NOW IN MAGNIFICENT FORM, TO TAKE THE BOWLING WHEREVER POSSIBLE. HAVING REACHED HIS FIRST 50 IN TWO HOURS AND A QUARTER HE PROCEEDED TO TAKE 75 RUNS OUT OF THE LAST 80 MINUTES.

FIVE MINUTES BEFORE TEA, RAIN STOPPED PLAY AND IT WAS NOT UNTIL AN HOUR AFTERWARDS THAT PLAY COULD RE-START FOR A FURTHER 35 MINUTES WITH DEXTER AND BOYCOTT BOWLING FOR ENGLAND.

WHEN THE SCORE REACHED 320, VARNALS WAS CAUGHT AT THE WICKET BY PACKS OFF A BALL FROM DEXTER. VARNALS HAD SCORED 23.

LINDSAY CAME IN, BUT AT 5.20 WITH A POSSIBLE 40 MINUTES REMAINING ENGLAND'S CAPTAIN, MIKE SMITH, AGREED WITH THE BATSMEN TO CALL IT A DAY. BLAND, WITH 17 FOURS AND TWO SIXES TO HIS NAME, HAD GIVEN SOUTH AFRICAN CRICKET THE BOOST IT NEEDED FOR THE NEXT MATCH.

IMMEDIATELY AFTER PLAY THE SOUTH AFRICAN SELECTORS ANNOUNCED THAT SEYMOUR, MCLEAN AND PARTRIDGE, ARE TO BE DROPPED FOR THE NEXT TEST IN FAVOUR OF BURKE, HALL, AND BROMFIELD.
