Background: United States Space agency officials are still aiming for a launching of the orbiting Skylab station on 14 May this year.
The National Aeronautic and Space Administration completed its last so-called 'End to End' tests on the Skylab on Sunday (25 March), and only one problem - apparently not serious- was found. The four-day test discovered worn-out parts in the cooling system of the airlock.
NASA also gave the Skylab severe cold weather tests, to estimate its value in extreme low temperature areas. That, said NASA, would be valuable information in the unlikely event of Skylab needing to make an emergency landing in the icy North Atlantic regions.
Skylab is the Untied States' first manned space station, and the mission is designed to carry out more than 200 scientific medical and earth resources experiments.
SYNOPSIS: The United States Space Agency said on Monday that May the fourteenth still seemed the right date to launch Skylab, the orbiting manned space laboratory. Here's an artist's conception of Skylab when it circles the earth 250 miles up. The three astronauts inside will study the earth as it's never been studied before, as well as running a series of tests inside Skylab. They'll carry out scientific, and medical experiments as well as studying the earth's resources.
To find out how well the command module will function in extremes of cold, Skylab simulated the icy regions of the North Atlantic, and the module came through with no major problems.
With only a few problems to overcome, NASA says it feels happy now about the launching date of May the 14th.
