Background: INTRODUCTION: The Rumanian Prime Minister Ilie Verdet arrived in London on Monday (13 April) for a four-day official visit. He is the first government leader from Eastern Europe to arrive in Britain since Mrs. Margaret Thatcher became prime Minister in May, 1979.
SYNOPSIS: At number 10 Downing Street, the London residence, a crowd waited to greet Mr. Verde. Rumania plays an active part in international politics and enjoys good relations with East and West and the developing world. After talking with Mrs. Thatcher the Rumanian premier will meet the British Minister of Trade,. Industry and Energy. Trade between the two countries last year amounted to about 350 million dollars.
Rumania has recently introduced new trade policies, preparing itself for the international recession. The Balkan country became the first state in the Warsaw Pact to sign a general trade agreement with the European Economic Community (EEC) last July. It's now trying to cut down its use of credits in deals with the West.
The Rumanian Prime Minister will visit Britain's North Sea oil rig platforms before returning to Bucharest.
