TRANSCRIPT SEQ. 2: KISSINGER: "I think you all recognise that we are dealing in the Middle East with an enormously delicate problem, effecting the relations between Israel and its neighbours, the relations of Israel's neighbours to each other, and the relationships of outside powers to the whole area. And in this extremely complex and very dangerous situation, it is necessary for us to move with care. My plans are within the next few weeks - and the precise date has not yet been set, but I hope to be able to announce it early next week - to go with .... to go in the next few weeks on an exploratory trip to the Middle East. It will not be a trip designed to settle anything, or to generate any shuttle diplomacy. It will be designed to first have talks with all of the major participants, all of the Arab countries that I have previously visited, as well as Israel, in order to see what the real possibilities of a solution might be."

Background: The United States Secretary of State, Dr. Henry Kissinger, is to make yet another trip to countries in the Middle East next month. But at a news conference in Washington on Tuesday (28 January), he ruled out a quick settlement of the area's problems, and said the visit would not lead to another round of "shuttle diplomacy".
He told the newsmen that he though the conflicting Israeli and Egyptian demands for the next stage in the peace settlement could be reconciled, even though the situation in the Middle East was extremely "delicate" and "Very dangerous".
No dates have been set for the trip, but diplomatic sources said Dr. Kissinger was likely to arrive in Israel on February 10, and then move on to visit Egypt, Syria, and Jordan. He is then expected to fly to Argentina for a Latin American tour, during which he will visit Brazil, Chile, Peru, and Venezuela.
