Background: The all-conquering British Lions team march triumphantly on. In the first rugby union test with the New Zealand all Blacks today (Saturday), the Lions won a hard-fought game 9-3.

A record crowd of 45,000 at Carisbrook Park, Dunedin, saw Ian McLaughlan crash over for a tenth minute try. Though the All Blacks drew level with a penalty before half-time, the Lions Welsh wizard Barry John kicked two second-half penalties to extend the British team's run of victories in New Zealand to 11. It was their first test match win in New Zealand for 12 years.

This satellite coverage of match highlights is accompanied by a commentary by former rugby international Cliff Morgan. But because of poor sound quality, our own commentary is given as an alternative.

SYNOPSIS: Saturday's first test in Dunedin, with the New Zealand All Blacks up against the all-conquering British Lions tourists. After only ten minutes, the Lions show the kind of form that brought them victory in their first ten matches in New Zealand....forward Ian McLaughlan storms over for an opportunist try.

Welsh wizard Barry John attempts the conversion. But this time he's off target.

But the All Blacks were already winning line-outs at a rate of nearly two to one.....And they were winning the attacking rucks at an even higher rate. From one of them, they seemed to be through for an equalising try.....But the linesman had already flagged for a touch infringement.

A record crowd of forty-five thousand had to wait until just before half-time for the All Blacks to draw level. Fergie McCormick kicked the penalty.....

Ten minutes into the second half, the All Blacks were penalised for offside. This time Barry John made amends for his earlier miss and restored the lead to the Lions.

Four minutes from time, a superb forty-five yard penalty by John made the score nine-three in the Lions favour. It's the first test they've won in New Zealand for twelve years.
