• Short Summary

THE RHODESIAN PRIME MINISTER, MR. IAN SMITH, YESTERDAY (FRIDAY) REAFFIRMED HIS STAND ON THE CRUCIAL?

  • Description

MR. SMITH SPEAKING (SOF) ON THE ISSUE YESTERDAY. THE FIRST THREE SCENES ARE SOF, BUT SHOULD BE USED WITH SOF TURNED DOWN.

TRANSCRIPT: SMITH: "OF COURSE, ONE THING IS CERTAIN, AND I'VE MADE THIS CLEAR TO THE BRITISH GOVERNMENT, WE WILL HAVE OUR INDEPENDENCE. THE ONLY UNCERTAINTY THINGS ON THE MANNER IN WHICH WE WILL ARRIVE AT THAT DESTINATION. THIS IS WHAT WE ARE TRYING TO DO NOW. AND ALREADY IN THE SHORT TIME THAT OUR GUEST FROM BRITAIN HAS BEEN WITH US, IT IS APPARENT TO ME THAT HE IS PREPARED TO MEET THIS CHALLENGE, HE IS PREPARED TO GET DOWN TO THE FACTS OF THE CASE, AND TRY TO ASSIST US TO DETERMINE WHETHER WE CAN PRODUCE A SOLUTION THAT WILL BE ACCEPTABLE TO BOTH PARTIES. I BELIEVE THIS IS POSSIBLE. I THINK WE ARE GETTING DOWN TO BASIC DETAILS MORE CLOSELY THAN EVER BEFORE, AND THAT AFTER THE VISIT OF THIS GENTLEMAN, WHICH I BELIEVE WILL LAST FOR ABOUT A WEEK, WE WILL HAVE A MUCH BETTER AND CLEARER IDEA AS TO WHETHER WE ARE GOING TO SUCCEED OR NOT. AND AFTER ALL, I THINK THE PEOPLE OF RHODESIA WOULD FAR RATHER KNOW THE TRUTH, EVEN THOUGH THE TRUTH IS NOT GOING TO BE WHAT THEY WANT. IT IS THE UNCERTAINTY THAT IS UNDERMINING THIS COUNTRY, AND IT WOULD BE FAR BETTER TO KNOW THAT WE ARE NOT GOING TO SUCCEED THAN TO BE ASKED NOT GOING TO SUCCEED IN NEGOTIATING, THAN TO BE ASKED TO CONTINUE IN THE STATE THAT WE HAVE CONTINUED IN FOR THE PAST FEW YEARS FOR ANOTHER FEW YEARS. THIS GOVERNMENT HAS DECIDED." (APPLAUSE).

Background: THE RHODESIAN PRIME MINISTER, MR. IAN SMITH, YESTERDAY (FRIDAY) REAFFIRMED HIS STAND ON THE CRUCIAL QUESTION OF HIS COUNTRY'S INDEPENDENCE. HE SAID (SOF) THAT INDEPENDENCE WAS "CERTAIN." THE "ONLY UNCERTAINTY" WAS HOW RHODESIA WOULD GET IT.

RHODESIA'S FUTURE IS THE SUBJECT OF CURRENT TALKS IN SALISBURY BETWEEN MR. SMITH AND THE VISITING BRITISH MINISTER OF STATE FOR COMMONWEALTH RELATIONS, MR. CLEDWYN HUGHES. YESTERDAY, THE RHODESIAN LEADER BROKE OFF THE DISCUSSION TO SPEAK AT AN AGRICULTURAL SHOW AT CHIPINGA, ABOUT 250 MILES (400 KMS) FROM SALISBURY IN THE EASTERN HIGHLANDS:--
(SENIOR OFFICIALS OF THE BANNED AFRICAN NATIONALIST PARTIES IN RHODESIA, NOW RESIDING IN NEIGHBOURING ZAMBIA, HAVE ASKED TO MEET MR. HUGHES TO GIVE HIM THEIR SIDE OF THE QUESTION).
