TRANSCRIPT SEQ 9: LORD RUSSELL: "I STARTED MY ARGUMENT AGAINST THE USE OF ATOMIC WEAPONS VERY EARLY, THREE MONTHS AFTER THE BOMBS WERE DROPPED ON HIROSHIMA AND NAGASAKI. I MADE A SPEECH IN THE HOUSE OF LORDS ON THE TWENTIETH OF NOVEMBER 1945. NOW, A SPEECH IN THE HOUSE OF LORDS IS NOT A SUBVERSIVE ACTION, NOBODY CAN SAY THAT I STARTED BY BEING SUBVERSIVE. IN THE WORLD IN WHICH WE LIVE, SCIENTISTS DEMAND NO RESPECT EXCEPT AS MERCHANTS OF DEATH. WE, AS THE VAST MOVEMENT OF PUBLIC PROTEST, DECIDED WE WILL HAVE THE HUMAN RACE CONTINUE IN SPITE OF THE POLITICIANS, AND I THINK NOTHING ELSE WILL DO; AND I AM ENGAGED IN TRYING TO STIR UP SUCH A MASS MOVEMENT AS THAT, AND I BELIEVE IT CAN BE DONE. THE YOUNG WHO HAVE NOT YET HAD THE CHANCE TO ENJOY THE NORMAL SPAN OF HUMAN LIFE DO NOT LIKE THE IDEA OF BEING EXTERMINATED BEFORE THEY ARE GROWN UP, AND WE THEREFORE HAVE A MUCH GREATER DEGREE OF SUPPORT AMONG THE YOUNG THAN WE HAVE AMONG THE OLD. THE TIME IS GRAVE AND THE TIME IS SHORT, AND I CANNOT REALLY THINK OF ANYTHING ELSE WHILE THIS DANGER HANDS OVER US."
