Background: In Venezuela, leaders of the Roman Catholic Church in Latin America assembled on Tuesday (27 March) for the opening session of this year's assembly of CELAM -- the Latin American Episcopal Council.

SYNOPSIS: The Assembly was held this year at Los Teques, about 31 miles (50 km) from Caracus. Representatives came from Central and South America, and from the Caribbean. It was the seventeenth annual meeting of the council which was founded to study the problems of the Church in Latin America, and to co-ordinate Church activities in the Villa Santa Maria Mazzarello, a convent in Los Teques, was under the presidency of Cardinal Aloisio Lorscheider, Archbishop of Fortaleza in Brazil.

Seven cardinals and fifty bishops attended the opening session. The main topic before the assembly was a discussion of the decisions taken at the Puebla Conference attended by Pope John Paul in Mexico in February. That conference ended with a declaration attacking the philosophy and actions of the military regimes which dominate the continent where half the world's 730 million Catholics live.
