TRANSCRIPT: "I AM SURE THAT CANADIANS IN ALL PARTS OF OUR COUNTRY WERE PLEASED WHEN THE PRESIDENT OF FRANCE RECEIVED SUCH A WARM WELCOME IN QUEBEC: HOWEVER, CERTAIN STATEMENTS BY THE PRESIDENT TEND TO ENCOURAGE THE SMALL MINORITY OF OUR POPULATION WHOSE AIM IS TO DESTROY CANADA AND AS SUCH THEY ARE UNACCEPTABLE TO THE CANADIAN PEOPLE AND ITS GOVERNMENT. THE PEOPLE OF CANADA ARE FREE: EVERY PROVINCE OF CANADA IS FREE. CANADIANS DO NOT NEED TO BE LIBERATED."

Background: PRESIDENT DE GAULLE HAS RETURNED TO FRANCE AFTER CUTTING SHORT HIS VISIT TO CANADA. HIS SUDDEN DEPARTURE FOLLOWS A STRONG REBUKE FROM THE CANADIAN GOVERNMENT FOR HIS APPARENT ENCOURAGEMENT OF FRENCH SPEAKING SEPARATISTS IN QUEBEC PROVINCE.

THE PRESIDENT WAS LOUDLY BOOED TODAY AS HE ENTERED MONTREAL CITY HALL ON HIS LAST OFFICIAL ENGAGEMENT. BUT HE HAD HAD A CORDIAL RECEPTION WHEN HE VISITED THE CITY'S METRO UNDERGROUND RAILWAY EARLIER IN THE DAY. AND HE RECEIVED A MASSIVE WELCOME FROM STUDENTS AT MONTREAL UNIVERSITY, THE CHIEF FRENCH LANGUAGE EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTION IN CANADA.

HE TOLD THE STUDENTS CANADA WAS RISING ON AN EXPANDING WAVE OF MODERN DEVELOPMENT WHICH THE PEOPLE WANTED TO MAKE THEIR OWN - BUT CANADA HAD A NEIGHBOUR - A COLOSSAL STATE 'WHOSE VERY DIMENSIONS CHALLENGE YOUR OWN ENTITY.

THIS WAS THE SECOND TIME DURING HIS CANADIAN VISIT THAT THE GENERAL HAD REFERRED TO THE POWER OF THE UNITED STATES. AS THE PRESIDENT LEFT THE UNIVERSITY, HE WAS CHEERED LOUDLY BY THE STUDENTS, HUNDREDS OF WHOM CHANTED 'QUEBEC LIBRE.'
THEN AFTERWARDS - ONLY A FEW HOURS BEFORE HE WAS SCHEDULED TO LEAVE FOR OTTAWA AND A MEETING WITH THE PRIME MINISTER, MR PEARSON - THE FRENCH EMBASSY IN THE CAPITAL NOTIFIED THE CANADIAN CABINET THAT PRESIDENT DE GAULLE WAS CANCELLING HIS TRIP THERE.

ON HEARING THIS, MR PEARSON SAID THAT PRESIDENT DE GAULLE'S DECISION TO TERMINATE HIS VISIT WAS UNDERSTANDABLE BUT THE CIRCUMSTANCES LEADING TO IT WERE NOT CREATED BY THE CANADIAN GOVERNMENT.

THE DAY BEFORE, MR PEARSON HAD REBUFFED THE GENERAL FOR HIS STATEMENTS ABOUT QUEBEC:
