Background: AMERICAN AND SOUTH VIETNAMESE TROOPS ENGAGED NORTH VIETNAMESE DURING OPERATION CEDAR MOUNTAIN LAST WEEK. THE FIGHTING TOOK PLACE NEAR THE VILLAGE OF AN LOI, IN HAU NGHIA PROVINCE, 20 MILES (32 KMS) NORTH OF SAIGON. DURING THE FOUR-DAY OPERATION, WHICH ENDED LAST SATURDAY (1 FEBRUARY), THE AMERICANS AND SOUTH VIETNAMESE CAPTURED ONE NORTH VIETNAMESE SOLDIER AND REPORTEDLY KILLED THREE OTHERS.

THE AMERICANS, FROM THE 25TH INFANTRY DIVISION, MADE A SWEEP OF THE AREA AROUND AN LOI. THEY USED LONG BAMBOO STICKS AND GRENADES TO PROBE BUNKERS WHERE THE NORTH VIETNAMESE MIGHT BE HIDING. COOKING UTENSILS AND FOOD WERE SIGNS OF RECENT OCCUPATION.

LATER, NEAR AN LOI, THE AMERICANS MADE CONTACT WITH A NORTH VIETNAMESE FORCE OF UNKNOWN SIZE. HELICOPTER GUNSHIPS PROVIDED COVERING FIRE AND A SMORE SCREEN. AMERICAN F-100 JET FIGHTERS AND ARTILLERY SUPPORT WERE ALSO CALLED IN.

THEN THE AMERICANS MOVED THROUGH THE BURNING GRASS TO TRY AND GET TO THE NORTH VIETNAMESE.

IN THEIR SWEEP OF THE AREA AROUND AN LOI DURING OPERATION CEDAR MOUNTAIN, THE AMERICANS AND SOUTH VIETNAMESE UNCOVERED A COMMUNIST HOSPITAL SUPPLY BASE. THEY ALSO CAPTURED A NUMBER OF WEAPONS, BICYCLES, A FEW CARS AND A TRUCK.

THERE WERE REPORTEDLY NO AMERICAN OR SOUTH VIETNAMESE CASUALTIES.
