Background: A SPANISH TRUCK-BUILDING FIRM HOPES TO WIN FURTHER ORDERS FROM CUBA THIS YEAR. LAST YEAR IT DEFIED THE U.S. CALL FOR AN ECONOMIC BLOCKADE OF THE CARIBBEAN ISLAND BY EXPORTING 100 TRUCKS. IT HOPES TO SELL CUBA A SIMILAR ORDER THIS YEAR.

HOWEVER, SPOKESMAN FOR THE FIRM SAID: "WE WISH TO DO NOTHING THAT MIGHT UPSET THE INTERNATIONAL SITUATION". NO TRUCKS HAVE BEEN EXPORTED FROM SPAIN TO CUBA FOR TWO MONTHS NOW.

THE FIRM, PEGASO, OF MADRID, DOES A LOT OF BUSINESS WITH SOUTH AMERICAN COUNTRIES. THE MODEL EXPORTED TO CUBA LAST YEAR WAS THE PEGASO 1060, A STANDARD-SIZE 12-TON TRUCK WHICH IS STILL COMING OFF THE PRODUCTION LINE.

(EARLIER THIS MONTH, IT WAS REPORTED THAT SPAIN IS BUILDING 42 SHIPS, INCLUDING TEN FREIGHTERS AND 26 TRAWLERS, FOR CUBA. LAST MONTH, IT WAS ANNOUNCED THAT LEYLAND, THE BRITISH COMPANY, HAD WON A CUBAN ORDER FOR ANOTHER 50 BUSES.)
