Background: THE HORSE SHOW OF THE YEAR ENDED AT THE EMPIRE POOL, IN LONDON, TONIGHT (SATURDAY) WITH THE SUPREME INTERNATIONAL JUMPING COMPETITION FOR THE RONSON TROPHY.

BRITISH RIDERS WITHSTOOD A STRONG EUROPEAN AND IRISH CHALLENGE TO FILL THE FIRST THREE PLACINGS. BUT CONSOLATION FOR DUTCHMAN TONY EBBEN, WHO FINISHED FOURTH. HE WON THE HARRINGAY SPURS FOR THE OUTSTANDING RIDER OF THE SIX-DAY SHOW.

TWENTY-SIX RIDERS COMPETED FOR THE RONSON TROPHY, AMONG THEM TWO WEST GERMANS: FRAULEIN UTE RICHTER AND HERR VON OPEL. BOTH WERE KNOCKED OUT IN THE FIRST ROUND -- FRAULEIN RICHTER RIDING HURLEVENT AND HERR VON OPEL ON ODETTE.

THE FINAL JUMP-OFF WAS NARROWED DOWN TO FIVE COMPETITORS, INCLUDING TONY EBBEN ON KAIROUAN. HOWEVER, WITH THE FENCES RAISED, HE COULD NOT MATCH HIS TWO EARLIER CLEAR ROUNDS, AND CONCEDED EIGHT FAULTS IN THE SLOWISH TIME OF 40.4 SECONDS.

THE WINNER WAS THE BRITISH RIDER GEORGE HOBBS, WHO RODE THE VETERAN ROYAL LORD, A 21-YEAR-OLD FORMER HUNTER, THROUGH ANOTHER CLEAR ROUND IN THE SIZZLING TIME OF 31.5 SECONDS.

AFTER HOBBS MADE A CIRCUIT OF HONOUR, EBBEN WAS PRESENTED WITH THE COVETED HARRINGAY SPURS.
