Background: A group of students members of the African National Congress (ANC) today (Thursday) started a 100-hour fast in Trafalgar Square, London, as a demonstration against the South African Government's apartheid policy. The ANC has been outlawed in South Africa.

The demonstrators chose the courtyards of St. Martin in the Fields Church for their 100 hour without food. They issued a statement recalling last October's United Nations resolution asking the South African Government to release all political prisoners. The statement also explained that their fast was designed "to rouse the conscience of the British people".
