Background: About four thousand university students in Central Rome went on strike on Friday (26 January) to stage an all-day protest against the violence which erupted on Wednesday (24 January) at a Milan university.

During that first demonstration, about 150 left-wing students fought with police outside the campus. During the fighting, one student was shot through the neck and hit several times on the head. The students also claim that two others from their ranks were seriously injured by the police. The student who was shot is now clinically dead. The other two are still seriously ill.

Friday's protest, in the heart of Rome, was orderly enough, but a huge force of police arrived in case any trouble erupted. It didn't. The students carried their anti-violence demonstration for two miles through the city, chanting ??? which condemned the police for their actions.

SYNOPSIS: Thousands of students gathered in Central Rome on Friday to voice a mass protest against police violence. The massive show of strength stemmed from a violent university demonstration in Milan on Wednesday, in which one student was shot through the neck, and two other demonstrators were seriously injured. The shot student is now clinically dead.

Since that first violent clash with police, student feeling against police has been running high, and similar marches have been held throughout the country, culminating in this big rally. Nearly a thousand police were called in to keep an eye on the rally, but it was orderly from start to finish. The march went for nearly two miles. The students waved banners, and chanted slogans condemning the police for their actions.
