Background: INTRODUCTION: Jimmy Connors took a further step towards blocking fellow American John McEnroe from winning the London Tennis Grand Prix for a fourth successive year, by soundly defeating Israeli tennis star, Shlomo Glickstein, six-four, six-nil in their quarter final. Sandy Mayer beat Roscoe Tanner in another quarter final.
SYNOPSIS: It is Connors, who has been playing with increased determination this year, to serve to Glickstein in the first set.
This time, it is Glickstein to serve. The Israeli player was in strong attacking form, and managed to hold his service against Connors, four-five, at the end of the third game.
Match point in the second set, Connors leading five games to love. Connors returned to the attack with his service, and was on his way to the semi-finals.
Another quarter-final, with Roscoe Tanner of the United States serving to fellow countrymen, Sandy Mayer.
Again, it is Tanner to serve but he is no match this time for Mayer. Five years ago, Tanner reached the final of this tournament.
Mayer serves, but falls heavily on the court after losing the point. Down the years, Mayer has been unlucky with injuries, but appeared to be unscathed.
Mayer, in fact went on to take the match in the third set, sin-four, five-seven, six-one, an impressive win over a formidable opponent.
