Background: England boosted their European Championship bid with a 5-0 victory at Wembley Stadium tonight (Wednesday) at the expense of luckless Malta. The scoreline helped to atone for England's uninspired 1-0 victory at Valetta in February.
The result gives England the prospect of a tremendous struggle with Switzerland to qualify for the finals in group three of the championship. Switzerland preserved their two-point lead at the head of group three with a 1-0 win over Greece in Berne.
The crucial games will be played in Basle on October 13 and in London on November 10.
SYNOPSIS: At Wembley, Malta's part-time footballers faced mighty England in the return leg of their clash in group three of the European Championship. From the start the maltese are on the defensive.
It is 29 minutes before a free kick from Peters gives Martin Chivers the chance to head past Maltese keeper Vincent Bonaci.
Peters attacking on the right. A Maltese defender beats him but only to concede a corner, and Peters is there to head the resulting corner kick to Francis Lee , who nods in from close range.
England kick off for the second half, and at once the maltese defence is in trouble again. A desperate Camilleri handles the ball and a penalty is given.
Allan Clarke takes the kick... and sends Bonaci sprawling the wrong way to put England three-up.
Hardly a minute later and Martin Peters floats a cross over from the right to let Chivers head his second goal and England's fourth.
Then Hughes has a go, but from a blatantly offside position, and the goal is disallowed. So its left for full back Chris Lawler to make it five-nil with his first-ever game for England.
