Background: THE WOOD-CHOPPING ARENA IS ONE OF THE MAIN ATTRACTIONS AT AUSTRALIA'S FOREMOST AGRICULTURAL SHOW, THE ROYAL EASTER SHOW IN SYDNEY THE GOVERNOR-GENERAL'S WIFE, LADY L'ISLE, AND HER DAUGHTER, MISS CATHERINE SIDNEY, WERE AMONG THE ON LOOKERS AT THIS NATIONAL SPORT OF AUSTRALIA: AND CHIEF STEWARD WAS SIR CHARLES MOSES.

IN THE SAWING CONTEST ON 15-INCH LOGS, AUSTRALIA'S CHAMPION AXEMAN, JACK O'TOOLE SET A NEW WORLD RECORD. O'TOOLE, A VICTORIAN POLICEMAN, FINISHED IN 27 AND A HALF SECONDS - BETTERING THE EXISTING RECORD BY TWO SECONDS.

SIR CHARLES MOSES EXPLAINED THE SPORT AS THE FINAL OF THE UNDERHAND CHOP - A HADICAP EVENT - BEGAN. INTEREST CENTRED ON AN AMERICAN AXEMAN, GEERE, WHO COMPETED LAST YEAR WITH LITTLE SUCCESS. AS THE EVENT REACHED ITS CLIMAX, IT SEEMED THAT THE AMERICAN MIGHT WIN. HOWEVER REACHED ITS CLIMAX, IT SEEMED THAT THE AMERICAN MIGHT WIN. HOWEVER H. MCMORRINE WENT ON TO VICTORY WITH THE AMERICAN, GEERE, SECOND AND DEAN THIRD.

THE AMERICAN VISITOR TOOK HIS PLACE PROUDLY AS THE AWARDS WERE MADE .. AND THEN PREPARATIONS BEGAN FOR THE NEXT EVEN, THE FINAL OF THE HANDICAP TREE FELLING CONTEST ON TWELVE INCH LOGS, THIS WAS MAIN EVENT OF THE DAY. COMPETITORS MUST CUT SEVERAL FOOTHOLDS AND CLIMB TO THE TOP OF THE TREE - THEN THEY CHOP OFF THE TOP. AT THIS STAGE LIGHT RAIN BEGAN TO FALL- BUT THIS DID NOT DETER THE ENTHUSIASM OF THE COMPETITORS - NINE OF AUSTRALIA'S LEADING AXEMEN. BECAUSE OF HIS FORMER VICTORIES ATTENTION WAS FOCUSED ON JACK O'TOOLE AT THE NUMBER SEVEN BLOCK.

HOWEVER, WELL KNOWN TASMANIAN AXEMAN, DOUG YOUD WAS BEGINNING TO TAKE THE LEAD. THE CONTEST WAS CLOSE AND THE FINISH ONE OF THE MOST EXCITING SEEN IN THE WOODCHOPPING ARENA. JUDGES CONFERRED FOR SEVERAL MINUTES BEFORE GIVING THE VERDICT TO DOUG YOUD. MISS CATHERINE SIDNEY PRESENTED THE AWARDS.

    G. STEWART OF TASMANIA, WAS SECOND, AND JACK O'TOOLE OF VICTORIA, THIRD.
