Background: Soviet and world records have been toppling at the first International Spartakiade in the Soviet Union. Weightlifting is among the sports that Soviet competitors find suit them best.

SYNOPSIS: Sergei Arakelov of the Soviet Union is a former European champion. He's only 22-years-old but excels in the heavyweight league, and in this competition he broke two records in the weight category up to 110 kilogrammes. But they were his fourth attempts, and he qualified for only second place in the competition.

In this lift Arakelov was to hoist 235.5 kilogrammes. a Soviet record. In another lift he broke the world snatch record with 185.5 kilogrammes. But, as with the jerk, his record-breaking efforts helped him to qualify for only the silver.

Arakelov's earlier snatch shaved half a kilogramme of the world record held by Bulgarian Valentin Khristov. But he still had to concede the gold in this event to Taranenko who repeated his own Byelorussian record with a total of 410 kilogrammes.
