Background: TWO WEST GERMAN AIRCRAFT LOADED WITH RELIEF SUPPLIES HAVE LEFT BONN FOR LAGOS, IN NIGERIA, AFTER BEING DELAYED WHILE THEIR MILITARY INSIGNIA WERE PAINTED OVER. THE INSIGNIA WERE REMOVED AT THE REQUEST OF THE NIGERIAN GOVERNMENT, WHICH WILL NOT PERMIT MILITARY AIRCRAFT TO FLY SUPPLIES INTO THE COUNTRY.

ONE OF THE AIRCRAFT CARRIED FOUR TONS OF MEDICAL SUPPLIES AND EQUIPMENT, MORE THAN 7,000 BLANKETS, TOOLS AND VEHICLE SPARE PARTS.

THE OTHER AIRCRAFT CARRIED TWO LORRIES AND ONE AND A HALF TONS OF MEDICAL SUPPLIES.

THE LORRIES BORE THE RED CROSS INSIGNIA.

IT IS REPORTED THAT RELIEF OPERATIONS IN THE FORMER BREAKAWAY OF BIAFRA ARE BEING HAMPERED BY CRITICISM BY THE WORLD'S PRESS.

THIS CLAIM WAS MADE BY THE NATIONAL COMMISSIONER OF THE CANADIAN RED CROSS, WHO HAS JUST RETURNED FROM A TWO-WEEK TOUR OF NIGERIA. HE SAID THAT NEWS REPORTS HAD BEEN PARTICULARLY HARD ON THE NIGERIAN MILITARY AND GOVERNMENT.
