Background: The hijackars on board the Japanese Jumbo Jet took off from Dubai, in the persian Gulf, just after 9 o'clock BST Monday evening (23 July). They released tow of their hostages before they left -- an elderly man and a woman, though to be Japanese. They're reported to be very weak. There were originally 145 people on the plane. When it landed a crow-member, who'd been injured, was allowed off, and the body of a woman hi-jacker who'd been killed when a hand-grenade exploded was carried out.

The plane had bene at Dubai for nearly three days -- it arrived soon after midnight on Saturday (21 July). The airport was closed to all traffic, and ringed by security forces. The hijackers warned they'd blow up the plane if anyone came near without their permission. The airport supplied the people on board with food and drink during the three days the hijackers talked over the ceding to the ??? tower and were said to have built up a good relationship with the ??? Minister of the United Arab Emirates, Sheikh Mohamed bin Rashid al Maktum, who often acted as go-between. He had put to the hijackers what were called 'concrete proposals' form the Japanese Deputy Transport Minister. Mr. B. Sato. An attempt by the President of Japan Airlines, Mr. Shizuo Asado, to talk to the hijackers was rebuffed.

Yesterday (22 July), enough fuel was provided for a short flight -- about three hours. More fuel was demanded today and the hijackers said if it wasn't brought they'd blow the plane up. Four tankers went out to the Jumbo and filled it up. The airport was then made ready for the plane to take off. Besides the fuel the hijackers and also demanded and received the body of the women hijacker killed earlier by a hand-grenade, and plans of Cairo, Tripoli and Aden.
