Background: The Brazilian government has mobilised ten thousand troops and police in the search for Giovanni Enrico Bucher, the Swiss Ambassador to Brazil who was kidnapped in Rio de Janeiro on Monday. The Brazilian government has been studying two notes received since the abduction. One demands the release of 70 prisoners in exchange for the diplomat.

Neither of the two messages has yet been authenticated. The huge search operation launched by the Brazilian authorities has been codenamed'fine tooth comb', and is one of the largest and most intensive manhunts ever mounted in the country.

Roadblocks have been set up in many parts, and troops have even opened coffins in their search for Mr. Bucher. The 57-year-old diplomat was seized at gunpoint in a busy street near the embassy.
