Background: With clouds of billowing smoke, the "Adler" ("Eagle") - a replica of the first German railway locomotive, made by British pioneer George Stephenson - Dec 7 steamed 6 Kilometres from Nuremberg to Fuerth, West Germany, to commemorate the 125th anniversary of the first German railway train.

Over 200,000 sightseers lined the route as the train, to the accompaniment of international railways' bands, travelled on her 20-minute journey at 15 miles per hour.

An amusing moment was afforded the crowd when passengers - all in Victorian dress - were forced to climb down and push the train when it got stuck in a curve.

When Stephenson sold the original "Eagle" to the local German railway company for GBP850, he dispatched his master mechanic, William Wilson, to supervise its inauguration. Wilson made this historic journey on Dec. 7, 1835.
