Background: Marina Oswald, the widow of Lee Harvey Oswald, held her first formal news conference today (7 February). She was questioned by about two dozen reporters.

She told the reporters that she felt sorry for her husband. (Lee Harvey Oswald, the accused assassin of President John Kennedy, was himself shot dead by a Dallas nightclub owner two days after the assassination). She told them that Lee Oswald had practiced shooting occasionally, although she had not actually seen him do it, and said that her husband had acted entirely alone. He had seemed to be a normal American when she married him, she said. She discussed an attempt on the life of Major General Edwin Walker last summer and said her husband was responsible as far as she knew. She said she had been well treated by the Jarren Commission, which is investigating the assassination of Mr. Kennedy.

Our film shows her response to a question about her future. She said she planned to stay on in the United States and in Texas because "I love Texas". She hopes to be able to resume her profession pharmacy. In answer to another question, she said we had no idea why her husband had shot President Kennedy.

Throughout the news conference, Mrs. Oswald appeared relaxed and pleasant in manner. She answered questions quite frankly and briefly. Occasionally, they had to be explained to her because of her limited knowledge of English. After the news conference was over she chatted for a few moments with reporters, and then, with a sign of relief, said: "Now I go to church."
