Background: The Asante Kotoko Sporting Club of Kumasi, Ghana, and Asec of Abidjan, Ivory Coast, met in the first leg of an African Cup football quarter-final in Kumasi, Ghana on Sunday (12 September).

SYNOPSIS: The Ivory Coast visitors started the game well, and made a number of promising moves. However, the home side than started to dominate the game.

Kotoko mounted a number of attacks in the first half, but good defence by Asec and poor finishing by the home side prevented them from scoring. On several occasions the Kotoko strikers had chances to score, but couldn't finish off the moves.

Although Kotoko was the better team in the first half, Asec still managed to produce several attacks. With away goals counting double in the African Cup competition, the Abidjan side wanted to score some goals to improve their position for the second leg in Abidjan later this month.

The visitors were actually the first to score when a defensive blunder just before half time allowed striker Bawa to score, giving Asec a 1-0 lead at half time.

Kotoko fought back in the second back in the second half and almost scored an equalising goal on several occasions. Then in the 70th minute, midfield player Charles Osie finally scored the equaliser from a cross by Kotoko skipper Malik Jahir.

The Ghanaian side were later awarded a penalty after a foul. Malik converted the penalty to give Kotoko a 2-1 win.
