Background: INTRODUCTION: Vietnam has accused China of renewing attacks over the border they share. In the latest skirmish China is said to have shelled villages. Their troops are still holding areas just inside Vietnam, according to some reports.

SYNOPSIS: This is the border country in which the two countries have been fighting sporadically since the spring of 1979. Lao Chai village was one of the targets in the latest clash.

Vietnamese authorities in Lang Son province say propaganda leaflets and clothes were brought in by Chinese soldiers during an artillery bombardment.

The Chinese were said to have fired over nearly 4,000 shells, forcing villagers to evacuate their homes and take to the roads. Though there was a lull in the early part of this year, attacks by both sides have become more frequent since May. They have disrupted life in the local communities and fractured an uneasy truce between the two countries since their full-scale war in 1979.

In Lang Son, a provincial city only eight kilometres from the border, there are few people to be seen. In the last 18 months a third of the city's buildings have been destroyed, confirming that it is as a prime target.

The city railway station is one of the major transit points for Vietnam troops sent to the province from Hanoi. In the last month both sides are known to have been reinforcing their battalions constantly.

At a press conference following the latest raids this captured Chinese soldier was put on show by the Vietnamese.
