Background: Zambia's President Dr. Kenneth Kaunda, officially opened the President's Citizenship College at Kabwe on Wednesday (1 May). A May Day rally and march was also held at the adult college at the same time as the opening ceremony.
The President's citizenship College was jointly financed by the Zambian government and the West German Friedrich-Ebert foundation. A special guest at the opening was Mr. Heinz Kuhn, the Prime Minister of North Rhine-Westphalia and Deputy leader of the West German Social Democratic Party. President Kaunda inspected a guard of honour at the college before a march-past by workers from areas around Kabwe who will attend classes there.
In his opening speech, President Kaunda said the college was to be a workshop to produce better workers and better leaders of the Zambian revolution. He stressed the importance of political education for workers, and in turn their responsibilities to carry out the duties of citizenship.
