Background: SEVERAL HUNDRED INDONESIANS ASSEMBLED AT A UNION HEADQUARTERS IN JAKARTA YESTERDAY (FRIDAY) PRIOR TO STAGING DEMONSTRATIONS OUTSIDE TWO AMERICAN OIL COMPANIES. THEY DANCED AND SHOUTED ANTI-AMERICAN SLOGANS. SOME OF THEM WORE TYPICAL INDONESIAN CEREMONIAL FACIAL MASKS.

THE TWO AMERICAN-OWNED OIL COMPANIES ARE CALTEX AND STANVAC. THEY DEMANDED GOVERNMENT SEIZURE OF THE COMPANIES. THEY SANG ANTI-AMERICAN SONGS, STRUNG EFFIGIES ON THE PORTICOS OF THE BUILDINGS AND PASTED UP PLACARDS READING: "SEIZE CALTEX AND STANVAC" ON THE WALLS.

THE DEMONSTRATIONS FOLLOWED WEEKS OF ANTI-AMERICAN AGITATION AND DEMANDS FROM COMMUNISTS AND WORKERS ORGANISATIONS THAT AMERICAN ASSETS BE TAKEN OVER IN RETALIATION FOR AMERICAN SUPPORT TO MALAYSIA.

MEANWHILE, THERE HAVE BEEN REPORTS THAT AMERICAN AND DUTCH OIL COMPANY EXECUTIVES TODAY (SATURDAY) WERE TRYING TO GET CLARIFICATION FROM THE INDONESIAN GOVERNMENT OF YESTERDAY'S (FRIDAY) ANNOUNCEMENT THAT THE GOVERNMENT HAD PLACED ALL FOREIGN OIL COMPANIES UNDER ITS "SUPERVISION AND CONTROL". A MEETING BETWEEN THE EXECUTIVES AND INDONESIAN OFFICIALS BEGAN THIS MORNING.

THE ANNOUNCEMENT DID NOT MENTION ANY OIL COMPANY BY NAME, BUT OIL COMPANIES OPERATING IN INDONESIA ARE THE AMERICAN OWNED CALTEX, STANVAC AND PAN-AMERICAN AND THE DUTCH BASED SHELL COMPANY. THEIR TOTAL INVESTMENTS IN INDONESIA TOTAL ABOUT 800 MILLION UNITED STATES DOLLARS.

TOTAL OIL PRODUCTION BY THE FOREIGN COMPANIES IN INDONESIA LAST YEAR WAS 22 MILLION TONS. THE LOCAL MARKET ABSORBED FIVE MILLION TONS AND THE REMAINING 17 MILLION TONS WERE EXPORTED. UNDER AN AGREEMENT BETWEEN THE COMPANIES AND THE GOVERNMENT, INDONESIA GETS 60 PER CENT OF THE PROFITS AFTER COSTS AND THE COMPANIES GET 40 PER CENT.
