A new flag was hoisted above the Executive Secretary of the Organisation of African Unity in Dar-Es-Salaam, Tanzania yesterday (Thursday).

Background: A new flag was hoisted above the Executive Secretary of the Organisation of African Unity in Dar-Es-Salaam, Tanzania yesterday (Thursday).
At the official ceremony the now OAU flag was raised Executive Secretary of the Organisation's Liberation Committee Mr. Magombe, and the Assistant Executive Secretary Mr. Adesola.
Mr. Magombe told the assembled guests, including Heads of African diplomatic missions, that the new flag provides the OAU with a symbol which will serve as a rallying points of the members' common aspirations and destiny.
The new flag is designed with the OAU Emblem surrounded by a broad green stripe and narrow band of gold at the top and bottom, together with small interlocking rings.
Mr. Magombe said the Emblem heralds the unwavering determination of free and independent African stares to achieve the total liberation of African territories from foreign rule, as well as the social, economic and cultural betterment of the peoples of the Continent.
The OAU adopted the new flag after Leading Africa, artists were asked to submit designs in several contests, The design submitted by Mr. John Reuben Mudasia of Kenya was accepted as the most suitable for adoption.
