Background: On Christmas Day (25 December), Pope Paul officially opened the 25th Holy Year the Roman Catholic Church. The Pope took a silver hammer and struck three symbolic blows on the "Holy Door" which leads into St Peter's Basilica, in the Vatican. It was the first time the door had been opened since the last Holy year in 1950.

The Pope's words were: "Open to me the door of justice, this is the door of the Lord."
Later in a speech at the inauguration ceremony, Pope Paul called on Catholics to celebrate together the birth of Christ and to accomplish together "the jubilee of renewal and reconciliation."
After the ceremony, the Pope celebrated mass in St. Peter's Basilica before a congregation of 20,000. The ceremony was telecast live to an audience of 1000 million people - the largest television audience since man's first landing on the moon.

During the year, six million pilgrims are expected to visit Rome, seeking full remission of punishment due for sings. The invasion of visitors will be the greatest over experienced in the city, already on the verge of chaos. But despite the rising crime rate, traffic problems, inadequate health and social services, near bankruptcy of civil authorities and continuing industrial strife, Church officials are confident the influx of pilgrims will be handled smoothly.

SYNOPSIS: Pope Paul ed the procession to the Holy Door of St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican on Christmas Day...at the beginning of a spectacular ceremony to mark the opening of Holy year. Nineteen seventy-five will be the Roam Catholic Church's twenty-fifth Holy year - they are held every quarter of a century.

There ceremony was televised live to an audience of a thousand million people - the largest television audience since man's first landing on the moon. The fist holy year was initiated by Pope Boniface in the year thirteen hundred.

The seventy-seven-year-old Pontiff, flanked by white-robed cardinals, tapped on the ancient door three times with a silver hammer. The door, which had not been opened since the last Holy Year in nineteen fifty, creaked loudly ...and all over the city Church bells began to peal in unison.

The door was lowered away on ropes and pulleys.

The People hops the celebration of the Holy Year will give now life and unity to the church, which has been battered by internal dissent and doubts.

However, it will pose massive problems for authorities in Rome, as six million pilgrims are expected to visit the city during the year - the largest invasion of visitors over.
