Background: A day of national mourning was declared in Ghana on July 7 as the funeral of the three murdered high court judges took place in the capital, Accra. The judges, Mr. Justice Fredeick Sarkodee, Mrs. Justice Cecilia Koranteng-Addow and Mr. Justice Kwadwo Agyepong, were kidnapped from their homes on June 30 by an unidentified group of four gunmen. Their bodies were later found in the Accra plain on July 1, partly-burnt riddled with bullets. The Ghanaian head of state, Flight-Lieutenant Jerry Rawlings, has ordered a special inquiry, headed by Interior Minister Johnny Hanson, to investigate the murders. The government has now provided armed protection to the judges and the courts, however judges in Ghana have decided to withdraw their services in protest at the killing of their three colleagues, until the coroner's inquest. The Ghanaian Bar Association also declared two weeks of mourning.
