    Background: At approximately 11.30 p.m. on Tuesday, 24th February the 5844-ton Dutch ship "Callisto" was lying off the coast of Holland, some 60 miles north of the Hook of Holland, in dense fog when she was in collision with the 8479-ton Liberian ship "Andros Stream".

    The "Callisto" sank 15 minutes later. The 34 members of her crew got away safely in the ship's boats and were picked up three hours later by the German coaster "Julia".
