    Background: UNITED STATES MILITARY AIRCRAFT FROM THE AMERICAN EMBASSY IN DJAKARTA, YESTERDAY (FRIDAY) CRASHED ON TAKE-OFF FROM THE SINGAPORE INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT. OF THE 14 PASSENGERS ABOARD. ONE WAS KILLED AND 13 SUFFERED BURNS. THEY ARE NOW RECEIVING TREATMENT AT THE GENERAL HOSPITAL. FOUR OF THEM ARE IN A CRITICAL CONDITION. ALL THOSE ABOARD WERE AMERICAN MILITARY PERSONNEL AND THEIR DEPENDENTS.

    THE PROPELLER-DRIVEN C-47 DAKOTA WAS RETURNING TO DJAKARTA WHEN IT CRASHED. ONE OF ITS ENGINES PLOUGHED DEEP INTO THE GROUND MAKING A HOLE SOMEWHAT LIKE THE SHAPE OF A GRAVE. EYE-WITNESSES SAID THE AIRCRAFT CRASHED ON THE RUNWAY ITSELF AND BURST INTO FLAME. THERE WERE NO EXPLOSIONS.

    SCORES OF FIREMEN WORKED FEVERISHLY ON THE BURNING AIRCRAFT AND AXED CERTAIN SECTIONS OF IT IN ORDER TO EXTRICATE THOSE TRAPPED INSIDE. SINGAPORE AIRPORT WAS CLOSED FOR THREE HOURS DURING THE RESCUE OPERATIONS.

    THE AMERICAN EMBASSY IN SINGAPORE HAS STARTED A PROBE INTO THE CAUSE OF THE CRASH.
