TRANSCRIPT SEQ 4: CALLAGHAN: "BECAUSE I THOUGHT THERE WAS THE POSSIBILITY OF POLITICAL MISCHIEF BEING MADE, BY MY RESIGNATION, WHICH WAS NOT INTENDED TO BE ANYTHING BUT A SIMPLE RESIGNATION. BECAUSE A GREAT MANY OF MY COLLEAGUES CAME TO ME FROM THE BACK BENCHES -- I'M VERY GRATEFUL TO THEM -- HAD A LOT OF LETTERS FROM MEMBERS OF THE PUBLIC, AND ALSO SOME OF MY CABINET COLLEAGUES CAME TO ME AND SAID LOOK, WE'D LIKE YOU TO STAY IN SOME WAY OR OTHER.

INTERVIEWER: SOME COMMENTATORS IMMEDIATELY AFTER THAT SPEECH SAW IN IT SOME SORT OF A BID FOR THE LEADERSHIP.

CALLAGHAN: I KNOW THEY DID -- IT WASN'T INTENDED AS SUCH. ALAS, I CAN ONLY BE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE DELIVERY OF THE SPEECH AND NOT FOR THE CONSTRUCTION THAT'S PLACED UPON IT. THE PRIME MINISTER KNOWS THAT I AM IN FULL AND HEARTY SUPPORT OF HIS LEADERSHIP OF THE PARTY.

SEQ 5: INTERVIEWER: "WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ABOUT LEAVING THE HOME OFFICIAL?

JENKINS: I'M VERY SORRY IN MANY WAYS TO BE LEAVING THE HOME OFFICE. I'VE GREATLY ENJOYED THE PAST TWO YEARS.

INTERVIEWER: DO YOU REGARD THIS AS PROMOTION, SIR?

JENKINS: I CERTAINLY REGARD IT AS A MOVE TO WHAT'S AN IMMENSELY CHALLENGING AND DIFFICULT AN VERY IMPORTANT YOU IN THE GOVERNMENT.

INTERVIEWER: WHAT'S YOUR FIRST JOB AS CHANCELLOR GOING TO BE, MR JENKINS?

JENKINS: MY FIRST JOB AS CHANCELLOR IS GOING TO BE TO TRY AND LEARN ABOUT SOME OF THE THINGS ON WHICH I MUST MAKE DECISIONS.

INTERVIEWER: IS IT GOING TO BE A VERY HARD WINTER NOT YOU'VE TAKEN OVER?

JENKINS: WELL, I DON'T THINK I'M GOING TO MAKE ANY POLICY PRONOUNCEMENTS AT ALL.

Background: BRITAIN'S CHANCELLOR OF THE EXCHEQUER, MR JAMES CALLAGHAN, RESIGNED TONIGHT (WEDNESDAY), AND HAS EXCHANGED JOBS WITH HOME SECRETARY MR ROY JENKINS. IT WAS REVEALED THAT THE CALLAGHAN TENDERED HIS RESIGNATION ABOUT 11 DAYS AGO -- SHORTLY BEFORE HE ANNOUNCED DEVALUATION OF THE POUND STERLING.

THE 55-YEAR-OLD CHANCELLOR SAID IN HIS RESIGNATION LETTER THAT HE HAD BEEN CONSCIOUS OF "GOING BACK ON PLEDGES GIVEN TO A NUMBER OF OVERSEAS COUNTRIES" WHEN HE DECIDED ON DEVALUATION.

HE SAID: "I DO NOT THINK IT RIGHT THAT I SHOULD CONTINUE IN THE OFFICE, AND SO WITH THE DEEPEST REGRET I MUST ASK YOU TO ACCEPT MY RESIGNATION."
IN HIS RESIGNATION LETTER MR CALLAGHAN ALSO OFFERED TO RETURN TO THE BACK BENCHES. HE HAS ASKED IN AN INTERVIEW WHY HE HAD MADE THE OFFER, INSTEAD OF SEEKING AN ALTERNATIVE CABINET APPOINTMENT:
MR JENKINS WAS ALSO ASKED HOW HE FELT ABOUT THE CHANGE.
