Background: Traditionally, thousands of cheering subjects crossed the Nijubashi Bridge into the Imperial Palace, Tokyo, to wish Emperor Hirohito a happy birthday April 30. He was 59-years old.
On all previous birthdays, the Emperor appeared on the balcony with the Empress Nagako, but this year he was accompanied by other members of the Japanese Imperial family including Crown Prince Akihito, his wife, Crown Princess Michiko, and Prince Yoshi.
The Imperial family appeared three times in the morning and four times in the afternoon. From a specially constructed platform they received the ovation of approximately 100,000 well-wishers.
