Background: Typhoon Trix carved a swathe of destruction through southern and western Japan yesterday, causing landslides and widespread flooding, and disrupting communications. By today (31 August) 26 people were known to have died and eight were still missing.
Torrential rain running ahead of the typhoon today paralysed rail and air traffic in the Tokyo region, but the storm's 80-mile-an-hour (128 kph) winds were expected to have blown themselves out before they reached the capital.
This film shows the hospital at Itsugase, which was partly destroyed by a landslide, causing six deaths. Damage to shops and crops in the Kochi area and some of the 80 cars that were washed away at Nagoya when the Sumo River flooded are also shown. The film, in black and white, was telerecorded in Tokyo by Visnews.
