Background: Thousands of people crammed a square in Kadikoy - a suburb of Istanbul - to demonstrate their loyalty and approval of the new Military Government set up by 65-year-old General Cemal Gursel. Brigadier General Refik Tulga, Military Governor of Istanbul, was enthusiastically cheered and applauded after a brief of speech to the crowds. Some hung on the branches of trees for a better view of the proceedings.
General Gursel's provisional Cabinet of professors, jurists, professional civil servants and military officers is controlled by the 21-officer committee which organized the overthrow of Prime Minister Menderes' Government. Forthcoming elections to be held under the jurisdiction of this caretaker Cabinet will, General Gursel hopes, bring "sunny days" to the people.
